D.C. Health COMM Conference

2019 Preconference

About the Preconference

The DCHC preconference on Thursday April 25th will take the form of an all-day workshop, “Grant Writing 101: Boot Camp with NIH.” Breakfast, lunch, and a closing reception will be provided.

Anyone interested in learning more about obtaining federal funding for health communication research is welcome to attend. The day is designed to provide support for all levels. So, whether you’ve already been successful with obtaining funding and want to do more, have submitted unfunded proposals and need to learn how to move forward, or are just beginning and need help learning the ropes, this preconference is for you!

The morning will kick off with a panel of NIH program officers discussing their funding priorities and fielding questions about the funding process.  We will host a panel of program officers representing programs within the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research (OBSSR), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).

Next, we will host a panel of seasoned health communication scholars with a wealth of experience gaining federal research funding, who will act as mentors by sharing their experiences and providing advice. After lunch, we will engage in a round of small group sessions with our mentors, followed by a panel discussing the NIH proposal review process. The day will close with a reception, providing the opportunity for more informal networking.
